¿A ti, qué te hace feliz?

Oh sweet sweet safe zone...
Making decisions is not as easy as it seems. For some people, it's just a matter of turning left or right, but for me, there have always been more than two options. What about going straight or going backward, what if I stay still? Why do I have to choose among just two options all the time? why I cannot have both?
Anyway, one of the greatest skills of humankind is decision making so there I go through an endless process before coming to a final decision. I usually make a list of pros and cons and compare them a billion times. And at the end, no matter the choice I made, I will constantly think of the other options I left behind.
Except for one time...
Have you ever had that thing, person, object, or whatever situation you are in that you think it's the best and there's nothing else out there that can come close to the good that this is for you, so you don't want to ever let it go?
Well, it happened to me once, it was my first job. It actually came to me as a God-given opportunity, I didn't look for it but it was everything I could have wished for... except for one tiny little detail, it didn't make me happy.
I got there with a six months contract, so I told myself "do your best to go through the end" nothing else, and I did and I was asked to stay longer... and as I was still in this new discovery process I stayed. Not just six months more, but three years.
My first year was not that bad at all, getting to know the place, the people, my daily tasks, I quickly got engaged with a bunch of tasks that kept me busy. I remember it was so much for me to digest that I even cried in front of my computer while working late at night.
My second year there got better, I had gotten the rhythm of the activities, I was acquainted with most of my coworkers and the idea of professional development in there was starting to root. But the charm didn't last too long. Just when I thought I could really love to stay there forever, I got a slap on my head that knocked me down and let me know that there was way more waiting out there.
My third and last year there was way down... It just got worse and worse every time. Not even the money was enough to make me feel motivated, not even my coworkers that became friends were enough reason to be there. Sometimes it was so difficult to get off the bed and head to work, just the idea of spending all my morning there made me sad and depressed, the only bright thing would be my paycheck every fifteen days. I would tell myself "It's fine, you have a dream job, anyone would love to be in your shoes, there's nothing better than this. I've got to the last step of the ladder by taking the elevator, so be happy. Leaving or quitting would just represent going backward"
As leaving was not an option, I decided to stay as long as I was asked to do so but it suddenly became obvious that I was not enjoying my job anymore, I was still being responsible, doing what I had to do but just that, no more.
So one of those dull days, someone came to me with this incredible story about a Wise Monk and an apprentice in which the last one learned that sometimes we need a bit of a push to go out of our comfort zone so we can get the best of ourselves.
And so I did. It was very clear, there were just two paths, to leave or to stay. There was nothing else left. I noticed that I had been so close-minded and blinded by the easy way that represented to stay there even though it was not making me happy.
So I quit, having nothing better instead, I just left. I finished my last contract, thanked whoever I had to and I threw myself into the unknown, to a new adventure where nothing and everything was possible once more. Putting at "risk" my future or stability, I gained control of my life, I got myself back!
We don't die when our body stops working but when we stop living. There is always more than one way to do something, and there are always multiple ways to happiness.
Ask yourself... Am I happy today? Do I love what I'm doing right now? Does it make me feel alive? If the answer is no, what are you waiting for to make a change? You can be sure that the best is yet to come ;)
Btw... I did get something much better than what I had before, but as nothing lasts forever these days I'm feeling like I need a change |m|
I can't wait to see what's waiting for me around the corner!
